About the book

Something is going wrong in Bumblebrook. Quite a lot of things, actually.

The bell has gone off at the firehouse. By the time anybody finds both boots, the soup is on the ceiling, the ladder is out of the wrong window, and the fire engine has gone to a birthday party by mistake.

There are no words in this book. There is a great deal to look at.

Eighteen enormous painted spreads follow one very bad day from the first bell to the last light going out – down the pole, out the doors, across town, up the ladders, and home again for supper. Every page is packed with a hundred small animals all doing something different, and all of it going wrong at once.

And somewhere on every single page there is a pigeon named Wendell. He is not helping. He has never helped. He is extremely hard to find.

Made For Reading Together:

  • 18 enormous double-page scenes, every one a building cut open so you can see every floor at once
  • Completely wordless – the grown-up invents the story, and it is a different story every night
  • A hunt easy enough for a three-year-old and hard enough for a seven-year-old, on the same page
  • A large 8.5 x 11 inch format, printed in full color
  • An answer key at the back showing where Wendell was hiding all along
