About the book

Something is going wrong in Bumblebrook. Quite a lot of things, actually.

The tide has come in at the harbor. The trawler's net has burst on the quay, a shipping container has been opened on the wrong day, and somebody's dinner table has come off a crane at forty feet.

There are no words in this book. There is a great deal to look at.

Eighteen enormous painted spreads follow one very bad day at the harbor from low water at dawn to the last lamp on the water at night – the fish market, the lifeboat, the container ship, the cruise liner, the dry dock, the lighthouse and the boatyard. Ships and boats are cut clean open so you can see every deck at once, and every page is packed with a hundred small animals all doing something different, and all of it going wrong at the same time.

And somewhere on every single page there is a pigeon named Wendell. He is not helping. He has never helped. He is extremely hard to find.

Made For Reading Together:

  • 18 enormous double-page scenes, most of them a ship or a building cut open so you can see every deck and every floor at once
  • Completely wordless – the grown-up invents the story, and it is a different story every night
  • A hunt easy enough for a three-year-old and hard enough for a seven-year-old, on the same page
  • A large 8.5 x 11 inch format, printed in full color
  • An answer key at the back showing where Wendell was hiding all along
